I grew up at the Berkeley Flea Market, paid for my school clothes by working there, and we honored my mother's life and the flea market when she passed.
The Berkeley Flea Market is the heart and soul of South Berkeley, and there should be affordable groceries, cultural centers focusing on Black and Brown culture, educational support, and summer recreation and jobs for kids.
The Berkeley Flea Market is important and historic but needs better leadership, funding, activation, and a business strategy, perhaps by having BHS students volunteer and a business school consult.
We should encourage people to shop locally, support inexpensive food centers for small local business owners, maintain a vibrant community with small businesses, and include more Black residents without pushing them away.

To feel safe, Martin Luther King and Ashby need a left traffic lane to make safe turns, and there need to be bus and bike lanes, as well as new entertaining connections for the younger generation.
The city should be careful with improvements like speedy bike spaces, which are convenient for bikes but dangerous for the sight-impaired or mobility-limited.
There should be trees, sidewalks, benches, lighting at night, traffic calming, safer pedestrian crossings, and the removal of the slip lane at Ashby and Adeline.
Half of the ground-level square footage should be available for small low-cost startups, canopies, the flea market, kiosks, and storage, managed by the Local Flea Market Board.

Some seniors have small businesses and need a small place to be able to sell their crafts as a hobby and as a business and as a community contribution.
Yoga, and other body and health movement, activities and services are essential to the well-being of aging populations. New ground floor space that allows for community gatherings that are for movement health and body health and mental health are essential for aging senior populations.
Senior Saffen do not ride bikes easily and often rely on vehicles for personal transport, including hobbies and employment. Parking for seniors and especially the disabled community is essential.
Make sure there is a simple place for food, deliveries and other package deliveries for communities that often order food online and often order furniture or other necessities via the Internet
We love the Flea Market, and we need the Flea Market to thrive, and we want to make sure that their operations and their community is supported throughout the entire process of construction and beyond.
Seniors are very, very vulnerable to even minimal rent increases or utility increases or maintenance fees or other types of additional fees because living on a fixed income is all we get. We need fries predictability for food, transport, rent, and all additional utilities and fees so that we can manage our financial futures.
Sleep is essential to health and well-being and seniors, especially need apartments that provide a safe and quiet place to rest which includes windows that have soundproofing and are also insulated to save energy costs.
In general, seniors need a little bit more free space to move in the public space and in the corridors and also need places to pause like handrails seats, and other design items that help them rest while in transit.
We need spaces that work well for people that are visually impaired so that way finding and ease of maneuvering, especially within the building and during commuting or being in the public realm.
We would like ground floor spaces that serve the needs of seniors such as arts organizations, and other well-being organizations such as yoga movement, tai chi, Chi gong, and other types of organizations that promote longevity and health.
We believe South Berkeley needs more natural areas for play and public spaces with plants that provide fresh air and a place for local native pollinators and local animals.
We want to make sure that new communities that are designed here are open un gated, welcoming and face the neighborhood in a friendly and human scale way.
When the project is constructed, we hope that local people will be employed and especially local people of color will be employed and can learn the trades and sustain their employment throughout and beyond the course of the project.
We want to make sure that the buildings are set back from the sidewalk in a way that allows for plants and other greenery and seating that feels more like Berkeley.
